A significant part of this R&D expenditure is related to developing its next generation of power electronics for LCC & VSC applications. At present, all of Alstom's HVDC systems are based on the H400 valve of some 10 years vintage. The development plan is to replace this with the new H450 power electronics module with alternate application offerings in the form of the state of the art VSC converter technology. The power electronics development programme therefore includes two parallel work streams:
